Vernin confronts his father, the King, pleading for understanding and acceptance. He declares his love for Kael, challenging the rigid traditions of the court and the kingdom.
The weight of the crown felt heavier than ever as I stood before my father, King Theron. The throne room, usually a place of imposing authority, now felt like a suffocating chamber. Sunlight streamed through the high arched windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air, each one a testament to the passage of time and the traditions that clung to this place like cobwebs. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic bird trapped within a cage of bone. I had rehearsed this moment a thousand times in the quiet solitude of my chambers, but the reality of it was a storm I was ill-equipped to weather.
“Father,” I began, my voice a rough whisper, barely audible in the vast space. I cleared my throat, trying to project a strength I didn’t feel. “I… I need to speak with you about something of grave importance.”
King Theron, seated upon his gilded throne, turned his gaze towards me. His eyes, usually sharp and assessing, held a weariness I hadn't noticed before. He was a man carved from duty, his features etched with the burdens of kingship. He had always been a distant figure, his approval something I had strived for, yet never truly felt I possessed.
