A Shared Peril

The air in the royal gardens, usually a symphony of rustling leaves and distant birdsong, was now a discordant chorus of panicked shouts and the terrifying clang of steel. It had started with a tremor, a low rumble that shook the very foundations of the palace, followed by the screams. Not the frivolous shrieks of revelers from the previous night’s ball, but the raw, primal sounds of terror. I had been strolling through the rose bushes, the afternoon sun warm on my face, a rare moment of peace after the whirlwind of the past few weeks. Peace, however, was a luxury the kingdom could no longer afford.

A guttural roar, unlike anything I’d ever heard, ripped through the air, and then I saw it. A monstrous shadow, vast and winged, blotted out the sun. It swooped down, its talons extended, a creature of nightmare made flesh. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat of fear, but beneath it, a different rhythm began to stir. The rhythm of instinct, of a duty I had long wrestled with, now demanding to be answered.

“Get down!” a voice, rough and urgent, shouted from somewhere nearby. I didn’t need to be told twice. I dropped to the ground, rolling behind a thick stone bench as debris rained down around me. When I dared to peek over the edge, I saw him.
