The silk of the discarded cloak felt like a betrayal against my skin. It was a royal blue, the rich, deep hue of Vernin’s family crest, a color I’d only ever seen from afar, imagined on the shoulders of someone impossibly out of my reach. Now, it was in my hands, a tangible symbol of a world I could never inhabit, a world that was about to snatch him away from me.

The whispers had been insidious, slithering through the shadowed alleys and hushed marketplaces like poison. I’d dismissed them at first, a thief’s paranoia, the constant hum of danger that always followed me. But the more I heard, the more the pieces clicked into place with a sickening finality. Prince Vernin, my Kai, was to be wed. Not to some nameless noblewoman, but to Princess Anya of the neighboring kingdom, a union designed to solidify alliances, to secure borders, to ensure the future of the throne. My future, the one I’d dared to dream of with him, was crumbling into dust.

Despair was a cold, heavy stone in my gut. Anger, hot and sharp, flared behind my eyes. How could he? How could *they*? Had our stolen moments, our whispered confessions under the cloak of night, meant nothing? Had the fire that ignited between us, a flame so fierce it had threatened to consume my carefully constructed walls, been nothing more than a fleeting, royal amusement?
