The throne room felt colder than usual, the polished marble floor reflecting the somber light filtering through the high, arched windows. It was a place I’d always associated with ceremony, with pronouncements that shaped the kingdom, but today, it felt like a stage set for my own undoing. My father, King Theron, sat on his grand, gilded throne, his expression etched with the kind of solemnity that always preceded pronouncements of great weight. Beside him, on a smaller, yet still imposing seat, was his advisor, Lord Valerius, his face a mask of practiced neutrality.

I stood before them, my hands clasped behind my back, trying to project an air of calm I didn’t feel. The air was thick with anticipation, the hushed whispers of the courtiers lining the walls a low hum that did little to soothe my nerves. I caught a glimpse of my own reflection in a polished suit of armor – a prince, dutiful, obedient, but beneath the surface, a whirlwind of emotions churned. My heart, which had only recently begun to beat with a new, exhilarating rhythm, now felt like it was being squeezed in a vice.

“Vernin,” my father’s voice boomed, the sound echoing in the cavernous space. It was a voice accustomed to command, to unquestioned authority. “We have gathered today for a matter of utmost importance to the future of our kingdom.”
