The vibrant greens and blues of Veridian, once so dazzling, seemed muted, as if a thin veil of frost had settled over the city’s emerald domes. The cascading waterfalls, which had sung with such joyful abandon, now trickled with a hesitant, mournful sound. A chill, deeper than any wind from the northern wastes, slithered through the market squares and wound its way through the narrow, winding streets. The shadow, a creeping blight that had begun as a distant rumor, was no longer a whisper on the wind; it was a palpable presence, a suffocating weight on the very air they breathed.
Elara felt it most keenly. A prickling sensation on her skin, like a thousand tiny ice shards, would bloom whenever the shadow’s influence neared. Today, it was a constant ache, a dull throb beneath her ribs. She watched a group of Veridian children, their faces usually alight with laughter, huddle together, their small hands clasped tight. Their games had ceased, replaced by hushed, wide-eyed glances towards the shimmering, yet increasingly dim, aurora that still painted the sky.
“It’s getting worse,” Finn said, his voice low, his strong arms crossed over his chest. He stood beside Elara, his gaze sweeping across the subdued cityscape. The usual bustling energy of Veridian felt like a memory from a different lifetime. Even the usually boisterous merchants spoke in hushed tones, their wares displayed with a certain resignation.
