The weight of secrets was a familiar burden, one I’d carried for as long as I could remember. But this new weight, this burgeoning trust in Prince William, felt different. It was a fragile thing, like a spiderweb spun in the pre-dawn light, beautiful but easily broken. Every shared glance, every hushed conversation in the shadowed alcoves of the palace, tightened the knot of anxiety in my chest.
He called me Kael – a name I’d plucked from the wind, a phantom identity to match my phantom existence. He spoke to me with a gentle cadence, his eyes, the color of a stormy sea, holding a warmth that threatened to melt the ice around my heart. He didn’t know. Not really. He saw a scared, quick-witted boy caught in a foolish act, a stray dog he’d decided to shelter. He didn’t see the thief, the deaf man, the one who lived in the hushed world of shadows.
“You seem… distant today, Kael,” William said, his voice a low melody that vibrated through the silence I’d so carefully constructed. We were in his private study, the air thick with the scent of old parchment and polished wood. He was sketching in a leather-bound book, his brow furrowed in concentration. I sat across from him, pretending to examine a tapestry depicting a rather gruesome battle, my fingers tracing the threads, my mind a million miles away.
