The glint of gold, the rustle of silk, the murmur of a hundred voices – it was a symphony of wealth I’d been trying to plunder. But the music turned discordant the moment the torchlight caught me, a rat caught in the beam. Panic, a cold, sharp claw, dug into my gut. Guards, their steel a terrifying, silent threat, descended. My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat I prayed no one could hear. My hands, slick with sweat, fumbled uselessly at the empty pouch. I was trapped, exposed.

Then, a voice. Not loud, but clear, cutting through the rising tension. It belonged to him. Prince William. His face, framed by the soft glow of the torches, was a mask of concern, yet his eyes… his eyes held a depth I couldn’t fathom. He looked at me, truly looked, and I saw not accusation, but something akin to… understanding? It was a dangerous flicker, a spark in the suffocating darkness of my fear.

He spoke, his words a low rumble that vibrated through the air, though I couldn’t grasp their meaning. But his gestures, the subtle tilt of his head, the way his gaze swept past me, then pointedly away, spoke volumes. He was creating a narrative, a shield. He turned to the guards, his voice firm, and then, with a knowing glance that held me captive, he indicated a dark alleyway. “He went that way,” he declared, his tone leaving no room for argument. “Ran like a frightened cur.”
