Chapter 20
A Shattered Oath
Kael makes his decision, embracing a new reality. The oath of secrecy is broken, replaced by an unexpected alliance and the lingering question of what their future holds.
The air still tasted of fear, a metallic tang that clung to the back of my throat. It had been days since the chaos of the procession, days since Prince William’s unexpected intervention had plucked me from the jaws of the royal guard. I’d vanished back into the labyrinthine alleys, a phantom once more, but the memory of his eyes, so unnervingly calm amidst the panic, burned behind mine. He hadn't seen a thief, not truly. He’d seen a cornered animal, and for reasons I couldn’t fathom, he’d chosen to offer a hand, albeit a deceptive one.
I ran a thumb over the worn leather of the pouch I’d managed to snag, its contents a meager collection of coins and a single, tarnished silver locket. Not the haul I’d hoped for, but enough to keep the gnawing hunger at bay for a little while longer. Each clink of metal was a reminder of my precarious existence, a life lived in the hushed spaces between the world’s deafening roars. To be known as deaf was to be known as weak, as incomplete, a target for those who preyed on the less fortunate.
But Prince William… he had offered a different kind of vulnerability. He had lied. He had risked his own standing, his own carefully cultivated image, for a stranger he’d caught red-handed. Why? The question echoed in the silence of my mind, a persistent, unnerving hum. Was it pity? Or was it something more calculated, a game I didn’t yet understand? The whispers I’d overheard in the marketplace, fragments of hushed conversations about plots and betrayals, suddenly seemed to weave a more intricate tapestry, one that might ensnare even a prince.
