The alley reeked of stale urine and something far more foul, a stench that clung to my clothes and my skin like a second, unwelcome shroud. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the cacophony of the city – the distant rumble of carts, the shrill cries of vendors, the low murmur of a thousand unseen conversations. All of it was a blur, a meaningless roar that I’d learned to navigate by sight, by the subtle shifts in body language, by the tremor of the ground beneath my feet.

I’d been careless. So damned careless. The glint of gold in the torchlight, the hushed reverence of the crowd as the royal carriage passed, it had all been too much. A moment of weakness, a desperate reach for a purse that might mean a warm meal, a dry bed for a night. And then, the guard. The sharp, commanding voice that cut through the din, the glint of steel, the sudden, suffocating fear.

I’d bolted, of course. My legs moved before my mind could fully process the danger. Up narrow stairwells, over rooftops slick with dew, through a labyrinth of alleys where shadows clung like velvet. My breath hitched, a ragged gasp in the cold night air. I could feel eyes on me, the weight of pursuit pressing down. But I was good. I was *fast*. And I was invisible, a ghost in the city’s underbelly.
