Armed with her findings, Eleanor confronts Arthur. He is forced to reveal a long-buried family scandal and the true identity of the man in the photograph, putting Eleanor at a crossroads.

The air in the archive room of the Oakhaven Historical Society felt thick, heavy with the dust of forgotten years and the scent of aging paper. Eleanor clutched the worn leather-bound letters in her hand, their edges softened by time, much like the memories they promised to unlock. The coded message, painstakingly deciphered, had led her here, to this hushed sanctuary of history, and to Arthur Pendelton. He sat behind a large oak desk, his spectacles perched precariously on his nose, a man seemingly as much a fixture of the room as the towering shelves of documents.

“Mr. Pendelton,” Eleanor’s voice, though steady, held a tremor of anticipation. She placed the letters on his desk, their faded ink a stark contrast to the polished mahogany. “I believe you know something about these.”

Arthur’s eyes, sharp and intelligent behind the thick lenses, flickered from the letters to Eleanor’s face. A slow smile, more of a baring of teeth than genuine amusement, spread across his lips. “Ah, Miss Vance. Back so soon? I trust your research is proving fruitful.” He didn’t reach for the letters immediately, instead, he steepled his fingers, his gaze unblinking. “Though I confess, the sight of them on my desk is… unexpected.”
