The click of the lock, usually a comforting sound signaling the end of a day, was now a jarring punctuation mark in the oppressive silence of Eleanor’s house. She’d been perched on the edge of her armchair, the worn velvet a familiar balm against her anxiety, her gaze lost somewhere between the flickering embers in the hearth and the ghostly image of the man in the photograph. A shiver, not of cold, traced its way down her spine. It was the house settling, she told herself, the old timbers groaning under the weight of the night. But the unease persisted, a low hum beneath the surface of her thoughts.
Then came the sound. A scrape, faint at first, like a rodent scrabbling behind the wainscoting. Eleanor’s breath hitched. It wasn’t a rodent. It was too deliberate, too heavy. Her heart began a frantic drum solo against her ribs. She strained her ears, every nerve ending alight. The scraping grew louder, closer, punctuated by a metallic rasp. The back door. Someone was trying to force their way in.
Panic, cold and sharp, seized her. The letters. The photograph. They were still on the small table beside her, laid out like offerings to a past she was only beginning to understand. They were the reason. It had to be. Arthur Pendelton’s watchful eyes, his too-quick answers, his subtle probing – it all coalesced into a single, chilling realization. He knew. Or at least, he suspected.
