The air in the archive room hung thick and still, a tangible testament to forgotten decades. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating the hushed sanctuary of history. Eleanor clutched the worn leather satchel, its contents – the letters, the photograph, the coded message – a heavy weight against her hip. Arthur Pendelton, the archivist, perched on the edge of his desk, his gaze sharp, his smile a thin, practiced curve. He had the unsettling air of a man who knew more than he let on, his fingers habitually tapping a restless rhythm on the polished wood.
“So,” he’d said, his voice a silken rasp, when she’d requested access to the society’s older records, specifically those pertaining to the town’s founding families, “you’re looking for something specific, Ms. Vance?”
Eleanor had nodded, her heart a frantic bird against her ribs. “My mother. She… she was interested in local history. I’m trying to understand her passions.” A clumsy lie, but the best she could manage. His eyes had narrowed almost imperceptibly, a flicker of something unreadable crossing his face.
