The sun beat down with a relentless intensity, turning the waters of the Nile into a shimmering ribbon of molten gold. Khadija squinted, shielding her eyes with a calloused hand. The barge, a sturdy vessel laden with provisions and the hopeful anticipation of their small village, glided southward, each rhythmic dip of the oars pulling them further from the familiar embrace of home. Yet, with every league traveled, a knot of unease tightened in her chest. It was more than the apprehension of the unknown; it was a prickling sensation, as if unseen eyes followed their progress, their presence a cold draft on a sweltering day.

Amun, his bronzed skin glistening with sweat, stood at the helm, his gaze sharp and steady as he navigated the deceptively calm currents. He had been a silent, watchful presence since they met near the ruins of an ancient temple, initially offering his expertise with the river in exchange for passage. Now, his presence was a comfort, a solid anchor in the swirling currents of Khadija’s burgeoning destiny. He had a way of anticipating the river’s moods, his movements economical and sure, a stark contrast to Khadija’s own internal turmoil.

“The air grows heavy, does it not?” Khadija murmured, her voice barely above the gentle lapping of the water against the hull.
