A Word of Warning
Marcus finally decides to speak to Elias, not as a friend, but as a witness to his self-destruction, urging him to reconsider his choices.
The air in the dimly lit bar hung thick with the scent of stale beer and desperation. Marcus nursed a whiskey, the ice clinking a mournful rhythm against the glass, each sound a small, sharp echo of his own growing unease. He’d been putting this off, this conversation, for months, maybe even years. Elias, his oldest friend, the boy he’d shared scraped knees and whispered secrets with, had become a stranger. A stranger he was now compelled to confront. He watched the door, his jaw tight, a knot of dread tightening in his stomach. Then, he saw him. Elias, ever the picture of effortless charm, swept into the room, a smile already playing on his lips, his eyes scanning for a familiar face. He spotted Marcus and waved, a casual, dismissive gesture that sent a fresh wave of irritation through Marcus.
Elias slid into the booth opposite Marcus, his expensive cologne cutting through the bar’s musty aroma. “Marcus, my old friend,” he began, his voice smooth as polished mahogany. “To what do I owe this… unexpected pleasure?” He gestured to the bartender with a flick of his wrist, ordering a drink without even asking Marcus if he wanted anything.
Marcus didn’t return the smile. “I’m not here for pleasure, Elias. I’m here because I’m worried.”
