Chapter 5
The Unraveling Uniform
Elara starts experimenting with her aura, learning to channel her emotions instead of suppressing them. The white uniform feels like a cage, and her chronometer's glitches become more frequent and revealing.
The crisp white of Elara’s uniform felt like a shroud, a constant, itchy reminder of the person she was forced to be. It was designed to smooth out the edges, to iron away the vibrant hues of her soul and leave only a bland, acceptable canvas. But beneath the sterile fabric, her amber aura pulsed, a wild, untamed river yearning to break free. Every day was a battle, a silent war waged against the very essence of her being. She’d press her hands against her chest, feeling the warmth of her own suppressed spirit, and try to mimic the placid stillness of those around her. It was an exhausting performance.
Lately, though, the performance felt less convincing. The scientists, the ones who met in hushed whispers in forgotten alcoves, had planted a seed of doubt, a tiny sprout of rebellion. They spoke of her aura not as a flaw, but as a language, a vibrant dialect of the human heart that the Neo-Yellow regime had silenced. Dr. Thorne, with his kind eyes that seemed to see beyond the white uniform, had encouraged her. "Don't fight it, Elara," he'd said, his voice a gentle balm. "Learn to listen. Learn to guide."
So, in the privacy of her small, sterile apartment, Elara began to experiment. She’d close her eyes, breathe deep, and try to coax the amber glow from within. At first, it was like trying to hold water in her cupped hands; it slipped through her fingers, a fleeting warmth, a flicker of color that vanished as soon as she focused on it. But she persisted. She remembered the feeling of joy when she’d watched a flock of sky-larks take flight, the pang of sadness when she’d seen an old woman’s lonely face. These were the colors of her amber, the hues of her uncontrolled emotion. She tried to hold onto them, to weave them into a coherent tapestry, rather than letting them scatter like startled birds.
