Chapter 10
Thorne's Revelation
Dr. Thorne reveals his own past within the Neo-Yellow system, detailing how the regime was built on fear and the suppression of human potential. He shares his plan for resistance, centered around Elara.
The air in Dr. Thorne’s hidden laboratory hummed with a low, persistent energy, like a sleeping giant. It was a stark contrast to the hushed, sterile silences Elara had grown accustomed to, the kind that pressed in on her ears and made her own heartbeat sound like a frantic drum. Here, amidst the softly glowing vials and intricate contraptions that defied any logic she’d been taught, a different kind of quiet resided – one pregnant with possibility. Dr. Thorne, his kind eyes crinkling at the corners, gestured for her to sit on a stool that seemed to mold itself to her form. Beside them, a holographic display flickered, showing complex diagrams that Elara’s mind, even with its supposed ‘unpredictable thought,’ struggled to fully grasp.
“You asked about the Neo-Yellows, Elara,” Dr. Thorne began, his voice a gentle rumble that somehow cut through the hum. “About why they fear what they do. And why they fear *you*.” He paused, his gaze steady. “It’s because they built their entire world on a lie. A lie born of fear, and the desperate need for control.”
He tapped a sequence on a nearby console, and the holographic display shifted, revealing a stylized, almost artistic representation of a human silhouette. Lines of color pulsed within it, vibrant and varied. “This,” he said, “is what humanity once was. A symphony of hues, each representing not a flaw, but a facet of our being. Joy, sorrow, curiosity, passion, logic, empathy – all expressed in the unique colors of our auras.”
