The fog hung thick and heavy over Oakhaven, clinging to the skeletal branches of ancient oaks like a shroud. It muted the already low hum of the town, swallowing sounds before they could fully form, rendering the world a place of hushed anxieties. Sheriff Brody Vance navigated his patrol car through the clinging mist, the headlights cutting weak, hazy beams into the oppressive gray. His jaw was set, a familiar tension coiling in his gut. Another one. The third in as many weeks. Each death more brutal, more… unnatural than the last.

He’d seen his share of violence in his twenty years as sheriff. Drunks brawling, the occasional domestic dispute gone tragically wrong, even a handful of desperate robberies. But this was different. The sheer savagery, the way the bodies were torn apart, it defied logic, defied anything he could readily explain. The coroner, a man usually unflappable, had been pale and shaken after the last incident. “Like something out of a nightmare, Brody,” he’d stammered, his voice raspy. “Not an animal. Not a man. Something else.”

Vance had dismissed it as shock, as the grim reality of a particularly gruesome crime scene. But the whispers in town, they were growing louder, more insistent. Tales of shadows moving too fast, of guttural growls echoing from the woods, of a primal fear that settled deep in the bones. He’d always been a man of facts, of tangible evidence. This… this was a phantom.
