Chapter 11
Desperate Measures
Elias, realizing the danger he poses, attempts to isolate himself. He stockpiles supplies and fortifies his home, a desperate bid to contain the beast within and prevent further tragedy.
The wolf within howled, a silent, guttural plea that Elias felt vibrating in his very bones. It was a primal scream, a yearning for the hunt, for the moon’s cold kiss upon his fur. He pressed his palms against his temples, trying to quell the rising tide of instinct that threatened to drown his carefully constructed world. The research, the dusty tomes, the cryptic scrawls of his Uncle Aris – they had promised knowledge, a key to understanding the darkness that was now his own. Instead, they had unlocked a Pandora’s Box, and the contents were ravenous.
He paced the confines of his study, the scent of old paper and dried ink now intermingled with something else, something wild and musky that emanated from his own skin. His reflection in the darkened windowpane was a stranger, his eyes possessing a feral glint that hadn't been there weeks ago. The subtle shifts were no longer subtle. His senses were heightened, the rustle of leaves outside his isolated cottage sounding like a stampede, the distant bleating of sheep a siren song. The gnawing hunger, once a mere discomfort, had become an all-consuming ache.
The news from Oakhaven was a constant, gnawing dread. Another body. This time, a young woman, found near the edge of the woods, her remains… unrecognizable. Sheriff Brody Vance, grim and determined, was quoted in the Oakhaven Gazette, his words a stark echo of the fear that gripped the town. He spoke of a savage beast, a predator unlike any seen before, and his pronouncements, though lacking any real understanding, struck Elias with the force of a physical blow. He was the beast. He was the predator.
