The humid air of Mbarara clung to my skin as I stepped off the matatu, the familiar scent of diesel fumes and ripe mangoes filling my nostrils. It was my first day at the Mbarara Institute for Social Development, and a knot of nervous excitement tightened in my stomach. I clutched my worn backpack, its straps digging into my shoulders, and scanned the bustling entrance. Students, a kaleidoscope of colorful uniforms and eager faces, streamed past me. I felt like a tiny boat adrift in a vast ocean, utterly out of place.
