The afternoon sun, a warm honey spilling through the broad leaves of the mango tree, dappled the dusty ground where I sat sketching. My charcoal stick danced across the page, trying to capture the way light played hide-and-seek with the shadows, but my mind was a tangled mess of lines, much like the ones I was trying to create. Mama had called me for lunch an hour ago, her voice carrying the usual blend of affection and gentle impatience, but I’d waved her off. I was on the cusp of capturing something, something that felt important, though I couldn’t quite articulate what it was.

Then, a flash of vibrant blue caught my eye. A kingfisher, its plumage a jewel against the green, landed on a low-hanging branch near the kitchen. For a moment, it was a perfect, still image. And then, it was gone, a streak of iridescent flight vanishing into the dense foliage.
