The shadows of the old oak tree stretched long and distorted across the cobbled path, twisting familiar shapes into something… else. It was the same path I’d walked a thousand times, from the rose garden to the quiet, dusty library, but tonight, it felt alien, charged with an energy I couldn't quite name. A shiver, not of cold but of anticipation, traced its way up my spine. I clutched the smooth, worn parchment of the invitation tighter, its cryptic symbols a silent promise of escape.
Then, a rustle from the deeper darkness beneath the oak. My breath caught. It wasn't the familiar scurry of a mouse or the gentle flutter of a moth. This was deliberate, a soft, deliberate tread. A figure emerged, not walking, but seeming to glide from the gloom. The same figure who had pressed the invitation into my hand a mere two nights ago, a figure cloaked in a twilight that defied the moon's pale glow.
They were neither tall nor short, their form indistinct within the voluminous folds of their garment. What I remembered most vividly, and what now seemed to hum with renewed intensity, was their voice. It was like wind chimes heard from a great distance, a melody woven from whispers and rustling leaves.
