The air in the drawing-room was thick with the scent of wilting lilies and unspoken disapproval. Mother’s gaze, sharp as a newly honed needle, was fixed on me, boring holes through the crimson silk of my gown. It was a color that screamed defiance in this sea of muted greys and beiges, a splash of life in a world determined to drain every drop of it. My hair, with its unruly streak of electric blue, felt like a banner proclaiming my otherness, a secret I could no longer keep hidden. The invitation, tucked deep within the bodice of my dress, pulsed against my skin like a hidden heart, a promise of escape.

“Elara, honestly,” Mother sighed, her voice a silken whip. “Must you always draw attention to yourself? Such a vibrant hue for a young lady of your standing.” She gestured vaguely at my hair, her lips pursed in a familiar expression of distaste. “It’s… unseemly.”

Unseemly. The word hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. Everything about me, from the way I dared to dream of horizons beyond these suffocatingly manicured gardens, to the very blue of my hair, was deemed unseemly. I was a misfit in my own gilded cage, a rose with thorns too sharp for polite society.
