My gaze swept over the fractured landscape, the once-proud gum sculptures of the Gum Dynasty now resembling shattered stained-glass windows. Elder Rhubard stood beside me, his own form, usually a supple, vibrant ruby red, now a duller, almost brittle shade of maroon, etched with a thousand tiny fissures. He’d told me about the Great Betrayal, a story whispered in hushed tones, a wound so deep it had festered for centuries, turning joy into rigidity, love into brittle fear. It was said that a powerful sorcerer, consumed by jealousy, had unleashed a curse of unforgiveness upon the land, a curse that had slowly, insidiously, begun to petrify their very essence.

"It's… it's worse than I imagined, Anya," Rhubard murmured, his voice raspy like dried gum. "The elders speak of this time, but to see it… to feel the chill of it in my own form…" He trailed off, a sigh escaping him that sounded like the tearing of old rubber.

I nodded, my own heart a tight knot of anxiety. I’d seen the cracks, felt the rigidity in the air, but standing here, at the heart of the oldest part of the city, the damage was undeniable. Towering figures that once represented laughter and celebration were now skeletal husks, their gum forms so brittle they crumbled at the slightest breeze. The air itself felt heavy, thick with the unspoken weight of generations of resentment.
