Headmaster Thorne stood on the highest balcony of the Stars Academy, the night air cool against his face. Below, the courtyards were hushed, the students long since retired to their studies or dreams. The celestial spheres, usually a source of profound reassurance, felt… unsettled. A faint tremor, almost imperceptible, ran through the stone beneath his feet, a sensation he’d dismissed as imagination until tonight. He’d seen Elias, the boy from the dusty village, arrive not through the ornate gates, but as if he’d simply stepped out of the starlight itself.
It defied every rule, every established protocol Thorne had upheld for decades. Elias had not presented a single formal qualification, no glowing testimonials from esteemed tutors, no meticulously crafted essays on stellar mechanics. Yet, he had arrived. Thorne had watched from his study window as the boy, bathed in an ethereal light that seemed to emanate from within him, had simply *been* at the Academy’s threshold, a feat that should have been impossible.
He remembered the initial dismissal, the curt wave of his hand to the guards who’d reported the anomaly. “A trick of the light,” he’d declared, his voice firm, almost brittle. “Or perhaps a clever illusionist seeking attention. Send him away.” But the guards had returned, their faces etched with a bewilderment that mirrored his own growing unease. Elias was no longer at the gates. He was in the central plaza, calmly observing the celestial clock tower, as if he belonged.
