The hum of the city was a constant, a low thrum beneath Elias’s skin that usually soothed him. Tonight, it felt like a trapped, buzzing insect, mirroring the frantic energy within him. He sat in his small apartment, the ledger spread open on his desk, its familiar, cryptic symbols swimming before his eyes. The betrayal still stung, a sharp ache in his chest. Eleanor. He’d almost allowed himself to believe, to trust. He’d seen the glimmer of something real in her eyes, a shared understanding of the dangerous game they were playing. A sudden, sharp rapping at his door made him jump. His heart hammered against his ribs. He wasn’t expecting anyone. He peered through the peephole, his breath catching in his throat. Standing in the dim hallway was a figure he recognized, though their face was obscured by the shadows cast by the flickering overhead light. It was the shadowy figure who had warned him weeks ago, the one who seemed to know more than they let on.
