Elias sat hunched over his laptop, the glow of the screen casting dancing shadows on his face. The musty scent of old paper, a constant companion since he’d been poring over the ledger, seemed to cling to him. He’d spent hours, days even, tracing the bizarre symbols and cryptic notations, trying to find a pattern beyond the market predictions. There had to be more to it than just numbers. The sheer, impossible accuracy of the ledger gnawed at him. It wasn’t just predicting; it felt like it was *directing*.

He’d been rereading the section detailing the dot-com bubble burst, a period of wild speculation followed by a sharp, painful decline. The ledger had marked it with a series of swirling lines and a single, stark symbol that looked like a coiled serpent. He’d cross-referenced that symbol with his research on ancient symbology, finding echoes in forgotten alchemical texts, whispers of transformation and hidden power. But it was the dates, the precise timing of the peaks and troughs, that truly unnerved him. It was too perfect, too orchestrated.

“It’s not just a record,” he murmured to the empty room, the antique shop downstairs silent except for the occasional creak of the old building settling. “It’s… a blueprint.”
