Under Surveillance
Elias feels eyes upon him. His investigation hasn't gone unnoticed. The organization is aware of his prying, and the threat escalates.
The hum of the city, usually a comforting symphony to Elias, now felt like a low, persistent buzz beneath his skin. It was the kind of sound that made you glance over your shoulder for no reason, the kind that whispered of unseen things. He’d been walking home from the library, his mind still buzzing with the cryptic entries from the ledger, when the feeling had started. It was subtle at first, like a stray thought, but it grew, coalescing into a prickling awareness that he was being watched.
He’d tried to shake it off. After all, he was just Elias Thorne, a financial analyst who spent his evenings deciphering ancient scribbles. Who would be watching him? But the feeling persisted. Every shadow seemed to deepen a little too much, every passing car idled a second too long, every stranger’s gaze lingered just a beat longer than polite. He found himself unconsciously adjusting his pace, mimicking the rhythms of the people around him, trying to blend in, to disappear.
He quickened his steps as he approached his street, the familiar brownstone of his family’s antique shop a welcome sight. But even the comforting scent of old wood and beeswax couldn’t quite dispel the unease. He fumbled with his keys, his fingers suddenly clumsy, his eyes scanning the darkened windows of the neighboring buildings. Were those curtains twitching? Or was it just the wind?
