The air in Ms. Johnson’s sun-drenched parlor hung thick with the unspoken, a tangible weight that pressed down on my chest. Every object in the room, from the crocheted doilies on the antique furniture to the framed photos of smiling faces, seemed to whisper secrets of a life I no longer recognized. Thirty years. Thirty years of shared laughter, whispered fears, and unwavering support. And now, this. The truth, sharp and brutal, had finally been unearthed, a venomous bloom in the garden of our friendship.
Ms. Johnson, her silver hair pulled back in a neat bun, sat opposite me, her wise eyes, usually so full of gentle understanding, now held a flicker of something else – a resigned knowing, perhaps, or a quiet sorrow. She’d been the steady anchor in our small community, the one everyone turned to for counsel, for comfort. And she’d known D Money and me since we were scabby-kneed girls chasing fireflies.
“You have the proof, child?” Ms. Johnson’s voice was soft, a rustle of dried leaves.
