The Echo's End
The air in the forgotten part of town was thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something sweet and faintly metallic, like rain on old copper. Elara followed the winding, overgrown path, her heart thrumming a nervous rhythm against her ribs. It wasn't the darkness that bothered her, nor the rustling leaves that sounded like secrets being shared just out of earshot. It was the feeling, a prickling awareness that this place held something extraordinary, something that hummed with a magic she’d only ever glimpsed in the quietest moments of her own life.
She pushed aside a curtain of ivy, revealing a clearing bathed in an ethereal, soft light. And there they were. Creatures unlike anything Elara had ever imagined. There was Sparkle, a being of shimmering, iridescent wings that pulsed with gentle light, and Whisper, whose fur seemed to absorb and refract the shadows, making her appear both solid and fleeting. Tiny, furry things with eyes like polished obsidian tumbled over each other, and others, sleek and serpentine, coiled themselves around moss-covered stones. They moved with a grace that was both wild and delicate, their forms shifting and changing as if they were made of moonlight and dew.
A wave of relief washed over Elara, quickly followed by a surge of protectiveness. They looked so lost, so vulnerable, huddled together in this forgotten corner of the world. Sparkle, bolder than the rest, flitted closer, its wings leaving trails of stardust in the air.
