The heirloom sat on Elara’s mantelpiece, a silent, brassy sentinel guarding a past she barely acknowledged. For years, it had been just that: an heirloom. A slightly gaudy, vaguely Eastern European piece of intricate metalwork that her grandmother had insisted was ‘important.’ Elara had always been more of a minimalist, preferring clean lines and uncluttered surfaces. The heirloom, with its swirling filigree and an alarming number of tiny, inset blue stones that looked suspiciously like chipped sapphires, was the antithesis of her aesthetic. Yet, there it sat, a constant, low-level irritation to her otherwise serene existence.
Until the dreams. And the symbol.
The symbol, a rather peculiar knot of intersecting lines that looked like a drunk spider had attempted calligraphy, had started appearing in her sleep. It would morph and twist, sometimes glowing with an ethereal light, other times lurking in the periphery of her subconscious, a dark premonition. Then, one particularly dreary Tuesday, while dusting said heirloom (a task she usually delegated to a brisk wave of a duster and a muttered curse), her eyes snagged on it. There, etched into the base of the brass monstrosity, was the exact same drunk-spider-calligraphy symbol from her dreams.
