Overheard Hopes

Kaelen overhears Aurelia's plea to her parents and her secret confession of love for him. Hope ignites within him; perhaps his silent devotion is not in vain.

The tapestries in the King’s private chambers, woven with scenes of valiant battles and mythical beasts, seemed to mock Sir Kaelen. He stood in the shadowed alcove, the heavy velvet curtain a meager shield, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He was a knight, sworn to protect the royal family, a sentinel in the very halls of power, yet here he was, a thief of whispers, an eavesdropper on the most intimate of conversations. He hadn't meant to. He’d been returning from his morning patrol, the early light still painting the eastern sky in hues of rose and gold, when he’d heard the raised voices from behind the closed door of the King’s study.

He’d paused, a knot of unease tightening in his gut. The King’s voice, usually booming with authority, was laced with a frustration Kaelen rarely heard. Then came the Queen’s softer, yet firm, reproaches, and finally, Aurelia’s. Her voice, usually a melody of gentle warmth, was thin, strained, a fragile thread stretched to its breaking point. He couldn’t retreat. Not when he heard that particular tremor in her voice, the one that spoke of a deep, hidden sorrow he knew all too well, though he dared not acknowledge it.

“Father, you cannot do this!” Aurelia’s voice, though hushed, carried the weight of desperation. “Duke Valerius is a stranger. I do not know him, and he does not know me. This marriage… it is a transaction, not a union.”
