Chapter 6

Bringing Luna into the Family

Tiger gently coaxes the trembling black kitten, whom he now calls Luna, out from her hiding place in the barn. He nudges her towards the light filtering in from the open barn door, his purr a constant, reassuring rumble. Luna, still hesitant, stays close to Tiger's side as they emerge into the backyard. The party is still in full swing, but the noise no longer frightens her as much, with Tiger as her shield. Audrey spots them near the oak tree and approaches slowly, her voice soft and kind. She offers her hand, palm up, and Luna, emboldened by Tiger’s presence, tentatively sniffs it. Audrey gently scoops Luna into her arms, and the kitten, surprisingly, melts into the warmth, a faint purr rumbling in her chest. Back on the picnic table, Mom and Papa welcome Luna, offering her warm milk and chicken. Luna eats ravenously, then curls up against Tiger’s warm flank under a soft blanket. Tiger watches the party, no longer a fearful observer but a contented guardian. He feels the kitten’s steady breathing against his side, a new rhythm in his life. The night is filled with the sounds of celebration, but for Tiger and Luna, the greatest magic is the quiet warmth of belonging, a shared Halloween night that marks the beginning of their forever family.

The shadows beneath the old oak tree were thick, a velvet curtain of darkness that stood in stark contrast to the amber glow of the fairy lights strung across the patio. Tiger kept his belly low to the grass, his paws moving with the silent, deliberate grace of a predator, though his intent was far from hunting. He let out a soft, rhythmic trill—a sound he usually reserved for when Audrey opened a fresh tin of salmon.

He stopped a few feet from the twisted roots. The scent was there again: dusty fur, damp leaves, and the sharp, metallic tang of fear. It was the same scent that had clung to him earlier, after his unscheduled swim in the apple tub.

"Luna?" Audrey whispered, her voice barely rising above the distant, festive murmur of the guests across the yard. She was kneeling now, the knees of her costume—a shimmering, star-spangled gown that looked like a captured galaxy—brushing against the mulch. She didn't reach out; she simply sat, making herself small, mirroring Tiger’s patient posture.
