Chapter 4

The Box Ride to the Backyard

Tiger hesitates at the back door, his usual caution warring with his curiosity. Audrey holds a large cardboard box, lined with his favorite blanket, smelling of flowers. 'It’s time for an adventure!' she chirps. Tiger hops in, feeling like a king in his own fortress. Audrey lifts the box, and Tiger feels himself ascend. The ride outside is a series of jolts and bumps as Audrey navigates the lawn. The air is cool, smelling of dry leaves and apples. Suddenly, the box hits a bump near a large metal tub filled with water and red apples. Splash! Tiger tumbles out of the box and into the cold water. Embarrassed and very wet, he scrambles out, shaking himself vigorously. He looks like a grumpy, orange blur as he bolts across the grass toward the dark, quiet barn at the end of the yard, squeezing through a hole in the door and hiding behind old bags. He begins licking his fur dry, watching Audrey through a crack in the wall as she decorates the trees, waiting for his fur to be soft and dry before rejoining the adventure.

Audrey, her face alight with that peculiar, infectious joy that always preceded an adventure, stood by the door, holding aloft a large cardboard box.

It wasn't just any box. It was a fortress, a chariot, a miniature castle on wheels, and nestled within its sturdy cardboard walls was Tiger’s favorite soft blanket, smelling faintly of sunshine and the lavender soap Mom used. It was an invitation he couldn't refuse. He hesitated for a moment, his tail giving a nervous flick, before hopping inside. The blanket was soft beneath his paws, the sides of the box rising up like protective ramparts. He felt like a king surveying his domain, ready for whatever royal decree Audrey might issue.

"Come on, Tiger!" Audrey chirped, her voice muffled slightly by the cardboard. "It is time for an adventure!"
