Pearl, perched on the edge of her mother's bed, watched with wide, solemn eyes as Lyra’s breath hitched, a fragile sound against the quiet hum of the night. The blue tinge that had first appeared on her mother’s skin was now a permanent shadow, a stark reminder of the illness that had stolen her vibrancy, leaving behind a ghost of the woman Pearl remembered.
Isaiah moved about the room with a quiet efficiency that belied the turmoil churning within him. He’d spoken of a “serious case,” a phrase that echoed in Isaiah’s mind, a harbinger of the unknown. He remembered the doctor’s hesitant words, spoken in hushed tones as if the very air might carry them away: “There’s something… different about this one. The baby… it’s blue.”
