The quiet hum of Hamptom village had always been a lullaby to Pearl. It was the sound of predictable days, of familiar faces, of the gentle rhythm of life unfolding as it always had. It began with her mother, Lyra, her vibrant spirit slowly dimming like a candle in a draft.
