The air in this part of the labyrinth felt different, heavier, as if the very stones were sighing. It wasn't the comforting, ancient sigh of ages past, but a fretful, worried sound that seemed to seep into my bones. The walls, usually a soft, moss-kissed grey, now appeared to pulse with a faint, unsettling light, like the bruised skin of a forgotten fruit. I’d been so focused on the path ahead, on the next turn, the next whisper of wind that might guide me, that I hadn’t noticed the subtle shift until it was upon me.

Then, the whispers started. Not the playful, rhyming taunts of the sprite, but something far more insidious. They were my own thoughts, twisted and amplified, slithering out from the deepest, most shadowed corners of my mind.

*“You’re not strong enough,”* a voice, chillingly like my own, hissed from the left. *“You’ll never find what you’re looking for. This is all a waste of time.”*
