Chapter 7
The Atlas of the Soul
Eleanor traced the delicate, faded lines of the coastline with a fingertip, the paper beneath her touch whispering secrets of forgotten voyages. The atlas, usually a comforting presence, felt different tonight. A disquiet hummed beneath its familiar weight, a subtle shift in its ancient resonance. She’d spent the last few evenings poring over the sections depicting the Mediterranean, a region that had always held a peculiar, almost magnetic pull for her, though she couldn’t quite articulate why. Perhaps it was the sapphire expanse of the sea, so unlike the muted greys and greens of her homeland, or the promise of sun-drenched islands and ancient ruins.

It was then that she noticed it. A faint inscription, almost invisible against the aged parchment, etched in a spidery, almost apologetic hand. It wasn't printed like the place names, but seemed to have been added later, a hesitant whisper against the bold pronouncements of cartography. The words themselves were a jumble, a fragmented phrase that snagged at her memory like a burr on wool. She leaned closer, her breath catching in her throat.
