Chapter 5
The Compass of Desire
The scent of old paper and forgotten journeys clung to Eleanor like a second skin. It was a comfort, a familiar embrace in the quiet solitude of her study. Sunlight, thick with dust motes dancing like tiny, lost constellations, slanted across the worn mahogany desk. Her fingers, stained faintly with the sepia ink she so often used to trace the contours of imagined landscapes, hovered over the page. The Atlas, her constant companion, lay open to a map of the Baltic Sea, a place she’d only ever visited in the hushed tales of her grandmother. She remembered her grandmother’s hands, gnarled with age but surprisingly strong, as she’d pointed to a particular region on a different map, a coastline jagged and wild. “There,” she’d murmured, her voice a dry rustle of leaves, “is where the song begins.” Eleanor, a child then, had been more interested in the vibrant colours of the map, the fantastical creatures that populated the oceans, the ships with sails like butterfly wings. Now, the memory felt like a premonition, a whisper from the past urging her forward.
