Chapter 7
The Atlas of the Soul
The scent of old paper and forgotten journeys always filled Eleanor’s little attic room, but today, it felt different. It wasn't just the familiar dusty perfume of her beloved atlas; it was as if the very air hummed with anticipation. Sunlight, dappled through the dusty panes, painted shifting patterns on the worn leather cover of the atlas spread open on her lap. Each map was a whispered story, a silent conversation between her and the cartographer long gone.
Today, however, her gaze was fixed on a map that had, until recently, been a blank space in her mind – the rugged, windswept coast of a place called Aethelgard. It wasn't just a name or a date; it was a riddle, a string of words that snagged at the edges of her memory like burrs on a wool coat. "Where the sea kisses the stone and the sky weeps tears of amber, the lost shall find their way."
She’d spent days pondering it, the words a persistent hum beneath her daily thoughts. She’d consulted other atlases, her grandfather’s old encyclopedias, even the dusty local history books from the library. But Aethelgard remained an enigma, a place that existed only within the pages of her whispering atlas. It was as if the map itself had conjured this mystery, a personal invitation.
