The scent of old paper and dust motes dancing in the slivers of sunlight that pierced the attic window were Eleanor’s constant companions. It had been weeks since she’d found the atlas, weeks of tracing phantom coastlines and whispering forgotten names. Today, however, a different kind of whisper filled the air, a hum of anticipation that vibrated in her fingertips as she carefully unfurled the map of Ireland. This was the place, the one etched with the strange, spidery inscription that had sparked her journey.

She had arrived in Dublin with a flutter of nerves, a small suitcase, and the atlas tucked protectively into her satchel. The city was a tapestry of brick and stone, alive with the chatter of voices and the distant cry of gulls. It was a far cry from the hushed solitude of her attic, and yet, a strange sense of homecoming settled over her as she walked the cobbled streets. The air, damp and carrying the tang of the Liffey, felt like a forgotten memory.

Her lodgings were a small, cozy room above a bookshop, its windows overlooking a narrow lane. The proprietor, a kind woman with eyes the color of faded denim and a smile that crinkled at the corners, had welcomed her with a pot of strong, hot tea. “You’re Eleanor, then?” she’d asked, her voice a gentle melody. “The young lady interested in the old maps. I’ve a few more in the back, if you fancy a look.”
