The journey back felt both longer and shorter than the one away. Longer, because every step carried the weight of what I had to do, the precious Sunstone nestled carefully in my satchel, its warmth a constant, reassuring hum against my side. Shorter, because the fear that had gnawed at me on the way out had begun to recede, replaced by a quiet, determined resolve. The Sunstone’s light, even contained, seemed to chase away the shadows that clung to my heart.

As I drew closer to my village, the familiar silhouette of the mountains against the sky brought a lump to my throat. It was a sight I had always taken for granted, a backdrop to my ordinary, beautiful life. Now, it felt like a fragile treasure, one I had fought to protect. The air grew heavier with the scent of pine and damp earth, but beneath it, I could still detect that faint, unsettling perfume of decay, the lingering whisper of the blight.

I walked through the outskirts of the village, the houses looking like weary old souls slumped against each other. The vibrant colors I remembered from my childhood seemed muted, as if a fine layer of dust had settled over everything. The laughter of children was a rare sound, and the usual hum of activity – the clatter of looms, the chatter of villagers, the songs of the market – was replaced by a somber quiet. It was the quiet of forgotten melodies.
