The cool morning air, usually a gentle caress against Elara’s cheeks, felt sharper today, carrying with it an unseen tremor. She’d woken with a peculiar unease, a knot in her stomach that even the comforting aroma of brewing chamomile tea couldn’t quite unravel. As she stepped out to fetch water from the well, her gaze fell upon something nestled amongst the dew-kissed clover near her garden gate. It was small, dull, and glinted faintly in the early light.

Curiosity, a quiet but persistent companion, drew her closer. She knelt, her fingers brushing away the damp earth. It was a locket, made of tarnished silver, its surface etched with a delicate, looping symbol. Elara’s breath hitched. The symbol… she knew it. It was the same intricate design that adorned the worn velvet lining of the old wooden box her grandmother had kept hidden away. A box Elara had only recently, and with a shiver of trepidation, begun to explore.

Her heart thumped a frantic rhythm against her ribs. This locket, so small and seemingly insignificant, felt like a dropped stitch in the fabric of her quiet existence, a snag that threatened to unravel everything. She picked it up, its weight surprisingly substantial in her palm. It was cold, as if it had absorbed the chill of the earth it had rested in. There was a tiny clasp, stiff with age. With a gentle prod of her thumbnail, it sprang open.
