The afternoon sun, a pale imitation of its summer vigour, slanted through the lace curtains, casting intricate, dancing shadows across the worn Persian rug. Eleanor sat by the window, her teacup, cradled in hands that trembled ever so slightly, growing cold. The scent of lavender from the sachet tucked into her knitting basket mingled with the faint, musty aroma of old paper that always clung to her small cottage. It was a scent she’d come to associate with the quiet hum of her days, a gentle lullaby of solitude. Yet, today, the quiet felt less like a comfort and more like a cavern, echoing with unheard words.
