The afternoon sun, a pale imitation of its summer glory, slanted through the kitchen window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the stillness. Eleanor sat at the worn oak table, her teacup cooling in her hands, the faint scent of Earl Grey a familiar comfort that did little to anchor her. The cryptic letter, tucked into the pocket of her cardigan, felt like a stone, heavy and unsettling. Arthur Pendelton. The name itself was a faint echo, a ghost of a whisper from a life that felt increasingly distant, like a film reel flickering in a darkened room.

A gentle rap at the back door startled her. It was Clara, her presence a soft, reliable presence in Eleanor’s quiet orbit. Clara, with her practical smile and eyes that seemed to hold a deep well of understanding, was a balm to Eleanor’s often-frayed nerves. She carried a small bag, its contents likely a well-intentioned offering of baked goods or perhaps a new set of gardening gloves, though Eleanor hadn't asked for either.

“Eleanor, dear,” Clara’s voice was warm, like a well-loved woolen blanket. She stepped inside, setting the bag on the counter. “I thought I’d pop by. Brought you some of those ginger snaps you like. And a little something for the garden, though I suspect the frost might have had its say.”
