Elara’s breath hitched, a ragged sound in the suffocating silence of her dream-home. The air, once thick with the scent of her mother’s lavender, now carried a metallic tang, like old pennies and forgotten tears. The Shadow Man was closer. She could feel him, a prickling sensation on her skin, a cold dread that seeped into her very bones. His presence was a void, an absence of light and warmth that threatened to swallow her whole.

She pressed herself against the cool, smooth surface of the grand piano, its polished wood reflecting a distorted image of her own terrified face. The keys, usually a source of comfort, now seemed to grin like teeth, sharp and predatory. This was her sanctuary, her childhood haven, yet it felt alien, poisoned by the encroaching darkness. The grandfather clock in the hall, its steady tick-tock a familiar heartbeat in her waking life, now seemed to stutter, each beat a desperate gasp, a countdown to her doom.

A whisper, like dry leaves skittering across pavement, slithered from the shadows pooling in the corner of the room. “You can’t hide, Elara. Not from yourself.”
