The air in the glasshouse, once a comforting balm, now felt charged with an unknown tension. Elara traced the condensation on a broad, jade-green leaf, her mind replaying the unnerving encounter from earlier that morning. Silas Thorne. The name itself felt like a rustle of dry leaves, a whisper of something ancient and perhaps, dangerous. He’d appeared at the edge of the overgrown gardens as if summoned by the very thoughts she’d been having about Eleanor’s past.

He was tall, lean, with eyes the colour of storm clouds that seemed to absorb the light rather than reflect it. His voice, a low baritone, had carried a polite curiosity when he introduced himself, claiming to be a distant acquaintance of Eleanor Vance, a fellow enthusiast of rare flora. He spoke of her work with a reverent tone, his gaze sweeping over the sprawling estate, lingering on the barely visible outline of the glasshouse through the dense foliage.

“Your grandmother was a woman of… exceptional vision,” Thorne had said, a faint smile playing on his lips. “Her collection here, if what I’ve heard is true, is unparalleled. A veritable treasure trove of botanical wonders.”
