Chapter 12
Silas's True Colors
Elara confronts Silas, who reveals fragments of his connection to Eleanor and the estate's darker past. His motives remain ambiguous, a potential ally or foe.
The air in the conservatory, thick with the cloying sweetness of night-blooming jasmine and the damp, earthy scent of decay, seemed to press in on Elara. She clutched the brittle pages of Eleanor’s journal, the ink smudged in places as if from hurried tears or desperate whispers. Silas Thorne stood before her, a silhouette against the faint moonlight filtering through the grimy panes, his presence a palpable weight in the humid stillness. He had appeared as if from nowhere, a phantom conjured by the estate’s lingering secrets, and now he was the living embodiment of the questions that gnawed at her.

She gestured vaguely at the riot of unruly growth, the skeletal remains of once-magnificent specimens, the vibrant, almost defiant pulse of life that still throbbed beneath the neglect. "You were here. With her."
Silas remained silent for a long moment, his gaze sweeping over the tangled vines and the decaying grandeur. The silence stretched, taut and expectant, mirroring the silence that had existed between her and Eleanor for so many years. When he finally spoke, his voice was low, a gravelly murmur that seemed to absorb the ambient humidity. "I was. A long time ago."
