The teacups, delicate porcelain Arthur insisted they use for their afternoon tea, sat cooling on the mahogany table. Sunlight, softened by the lace curtains, dappled the polished wood, illuminating dust motes dancing in the quiet air. Irene traced the rim of her cup, the floral pattern a familiar, comforting landscape under her fingertip. Arthur watched her, his gaze a soft, steady presence that usually settled her like a warm blanket. Today, however, it felt like a spotlight, intensifying the tremor in her hand.

“You’re very quiet today, my dear,” Arthur said, his voice a low rumble, devoid of any accusation, only a gentle curiosity. He had been watching her more closely these past few weeks, his lawyer’s instinct for observation honed by years of sifting through facts and motivations, now turned inward, towards the woman he loved more than life itself. He noticed the way her eyes, usually so full of light, often drifted to a faraway place, a place he couldn’t follow. He noticed the slight hesitation before she answered even the simplest of questions, as if she were carefully selecting words from a language he didn’t fully comprehend.

Irene offered a faint smile, a fragile thing that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Just thinking, Arthur. The world outside is so… busy. It’s nice to find moments of quiet.”
