The air in the hospital, even on this blessedly mild afternoon, had a way of clinging, a sterile, medicinal scent that Eleanor found both suffocating and, paradoxically, familiar. For weeks, the world had been reduced to the muted tones of her room, the rhythmic beeping of machines, and the hushed urgency of hurried footsteps in the corridor. But today, a sliver of something else beckoned. Nurse Sarah, her face a canvas of gentle concern, had spoken of a small courtyard, a place where the sun, when it deigned to appear, actually felt warm.

“It’s not much, Eleanor,” Sarah had said, her voice a soft melody against the sterile quiet, “but there are a few chairs, and… well, there’s a bit of green. They call it the garden.” She’d offered a tentative smile, a gesture that always managed to pierce through Eleanor’s carefully constructed defenses. “Would you like to try? I can help you.”

The journey to the garden was a slow, deliberate affair. Each step was an effort, a negotiation with her own weary body. Sarah was a steadying presence, her hand a warm anchor on Eleanor’s arm, her conversation a gentle distraction from the physical strain. They navigated the polished linoleum corridors, the air growing fractionally fresher as they neared the glass doors that led to the outside. And then, there it was.
