The hum of the hospital, once a relentless thrum against Eleanor’s nerves, had softened. It was a familiar sound now, a lullaby of sorts, woven into the fabric of her days. The sterile scent of antiseptic, once a harsh reminder of her confinement, had become… just a smell. Yet, they had also held Mrs. Gable’s frail hand, had gently smoothed Mr. Abernathy’s brow when he’d spoken of his estranged son, had accepted the warm mug of tea Sarah offered with a gratitude that ran deeper than words.
